Local Advisory Board

Governance at Knowle- Local Advisory Board

Welcome to the Governors’ page for Knowle Primary School. We would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about ourselves, our roles and our aims.

Our Governing Body, now known as a Local Advisory Board, comprises of nine governors, all of whom bring different skills to Knowle; consisting of:

Two parent Governors

One Local Authority Governors

Three staff Governors which includes our Head Teacher

Three Community Governors

Boar members are volunteers who give their time and commitment to what we hope, is a very rewarding role and experience.  The Local Advisory Board are also subject to an OFSTED inspection at the same time and in the same way as the school would be inspected.

Our aim:

To be an effective board in challenging and supporting the school so that weaknesses are tackled decisively and our statutory responsibilities are met.

We will endeavour to do this by:

  • Holding at least one meeting per month at a local advisory board level
  • Appointing or remove the clerk.
  • Electing a Chair and Vice Chair.
  • Advising all parents of any parent vacancies, all staff of staff vacancies and to appoint community members.
  • Annually adopt the SEF.
  • Setting dates of meetings for the year ahead.
  • Noting term dates for the academic year and agree the occasional non pupil days.
  • Receiving Head Teacher reports.
  • Reviewing and monitoring examination/national test results.
  • Review the level of exclusions.
  • Monitor attendance of pupils/staff/members.
  • Reviewing, adopting and monitoring our Freedom of Information Policy.
  • Agreeing Curriculum Plans.
  • Setting pupil performance targets.
  • If required, consider the suspension of a governor/member.
  • Inducting new members to the board.
  • Encouraging governors to visit school and to review, adopting and monitoring a governors’ visit policy and feedback procedure.
  • Reviewing, adopting and monitoring the procedures for dealing with complaints from parents/carers.
  • Reviewing, approving and monitoring the School Improvement Plan.
  • Annually elect governors/members for the following responsibilities:-

With regards to: English, Mathematics, SEN (Special Educational Needs), Looked After Children, Child Protection, Healthy & Safety and Early Years, we will:

  • Maintain and update annually a file of pecuniary interest declarations.
  • Review, adopt and monitor a governors/members’ expenses policy and curriculum policy.
  • Review annually the delegation of functions.
  • Organise support and training for governors/members of the board.

As you can see there is a great deal expected of all local advisory boards, which is why it is important that responsibilities are shared.

Throughout we are supported by the Local Authority’s Governor Support Service who offer help, advice and training.  For more information about becoming a school governor, please contact the Chair of the Board via the school office to see if there are any vacancies.
