At Knowle, we place considerable importance on children achieving and gaining mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding. Being numerate is an essential part of their everyday life as well as a necessity in their future. We encourage children to make links within numeracy and apply their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding in a range of real life situations. Our school is fortunate to have a wide range of resources that are used in lessons which encourage children to actively participate and explain their thinking.
We have revised our calculations policy which outlines mathematical stages and shows the progressive methods that we teach within calculations. Click on the link to view as it can also provide support for parents and carers in helping your children use methods taught.
A strong emphasis is also placed on developing mental arithmetic. In daily lessons children are taught and encouraged to use their ability to solve questions mentally. We have recently introduced a scheme across the school called Fantastic Facts Club to enable children to develop a quicker recall of mathematical facts and a hightened ability to make links and use facts to derive other calculations. We also pay for each child to access the award winning Mathletics on the computer both at home and in school. Lunch time Mathletics Clubs are also popular. It contains 1000 mathematical learning activities, tutorials and timed challenges. It has highly motivated and improved children’s numeracy skills.
When appropriate we provide targeted interventions by a highly qualified teacher for groups and individuals. The aim is to help children overcome any barriers to learning and progress their understanding, skills, knowledge and confidence using an individualised or group programme.
We pride ourselves upon strong links with All Saints Academy where we are able to offer Gifted and Talented children the opportunity to compete with other schools in Maths in Motion, strengthening their ability to measure angles, calculate percentages on a racing track scenario. Children also develop an understanding of profit, loss and business with a Young Enterprise scheme alongside other Primary Schools and All Saints Academy. Puzzle days in Yrs 1, 2, 3 and 4 are also popular.
At Knowle, we encourage and actively plan opportunities for your child to apply mathematical skills across a range of subjects. To strengthen your child’s understanding of when they are using numeracy all numerical work such as data from a science experiment would be presented in their numeracy book. The use of our outside environment is also encouraged. We also seek to develop pupils numeracy skills with links with our PTFA through beetle drives, raffles, cake sales and Summer fete. School Parliament, Eco-schools and class plots also encourage the use of real life numeracy and enterprise.
