Maths

Year 1:

Starter: In your maths book draw the shapes and the missing numbers.

Today we are going to be using our knowledge of place value (tens and ones) to compare numbers from 0-100.

We are going to be using three symbols: greater than, less than and equal to.

For example:

14 < 34             14 is less than 34.

56 > 23             56 is greater than 23

12 = 12              12 is equal to 12

Activity: Compare these numbers. Fill in the missing symbols.

Mild

  1. 14             16
  2. 19               7
  3. 21              21
  4. 18              32
  5. 12              21

Spicy

  1. 45           76
  2. 71           17
  3. 62           69
  4. 41           41
  5. 36           29

If you can, explain to a grown up how you are comparing the numbers.

For example: I know 43 is greater than 32 because 43 has 4 tens and 3 ones but 32 only has 3 tens and 2 ones.

Hot

  1. One                eighteen
  2. Nineteen         six
  3. Ten                  fifteen
  4. Twelve            twelve
  5. Four                three

Encourage your child to read these numbers independently.
