Kahlo

Welcome to Kahlo class!

Welcome to the fabulous Frida Kahlo class!

This year we have named our classes based on inspirational people from around the world and from throughout history. We are a Year 6 class and children are encouraged to reach for the stars, aim high and strive to be the best they can. I will be teaching the class for the majority of the week and on a Tuesday the class have the pleasure of Mrs Clift teaching them. Throughout the week we are supported by the great Mrs Gilpin (Mondays-Thursdays) , the wonderful Mrs Waugh (Fridays) and the super Mrs Capstack (Thursdays-Fridays). During two half-terms we have specific conferencing time that will be covered by Miss Drage, as I work 1:1 with all children on their own personal targets and development, specifically linked to 'catch-up curriculum' due to COVID-19 impact.

Our three topics this year are:

- Autumn - World War Two

- Spring - South America

- Summer- Ancient Egypt

I love to hear from you all, so please feel free to contact me whenever you need to and I will always help however I can. Use the email address below:

Year 6 Reading Stimulus

Spring Term

During the Spring Term, we are studying South America during our Topic lessons. Within our English lessons, we are reading the much loved story by Eva Ibbotson - Journey to the River Sea, as a stimulus for our reading and writing. The story follows a young girl, Maia, and her voyage to The Amazon Rainforest to live with her distant relatives.

I know the children in Kahlo will be hooked with the book from the very first lesson and I'm positive we will create some wonderful writing. We will look at how Eva has described Maia's journey down the Amazon River and used vivid vocabulary as well as similes and personification to create some incredibly detailed versions of our own.

We will discover that Maia loved reading and before making her move to The Amazon, she spent many evenings visiting her school library to find out about life in the jungle. Therefore, we will create some of our own information pages for Maia so that she could learn as much about her new home as possible. Soon you will be able to take a look at the wonderful work produced by Kahlo class.

Home Learning:

Due to restrictions with COVID-19, we are trying to keep home learning as virtual and contained as possible. We will be sending spelling lists home, which do not need to come back into school. Any other work that we do send home, we will not expect to come back into school again to limit contact between home and school. So, below you will find some very helpful documents.

1. Spelling lists for Year 2, 3/4 and 5/6. Children need to know and work on these spellings dependent on their ability.

2. Times tables: I have attached a document that has all times tables that children in our Year 5/6 need to know and practise.

3. Reading - I have attached some reading guidance on types of questions and conversations that would be really helpful for you to do with your child at home. The more they read, the better they are at reading!

If you need any help or guidance, feel free to get in touch with me on our class email address:

Many thanks,
