This week, children learn to count up to 8 objects and show them using concrete representations, including the ten frame. Children are introduced to counters as a representation of an amount for the first time.
Children may count too many or too few. Counting the same object more than once is common. They may also repeat a number whilst counting objects or miss a number out. Ask:
• Can you touch each one as you count it? Can you count again to check your counting?
When using the ten frame, children may not realise that the counters can be in varying places in the frame, but can still be successfully counted. Ask:
• Does it matter where the counters are in the ten frame? If you move these counters to here, is there still the same number of counters?
