Our Extreme Earth

English

Our topic this week is ‘Extreme Earth’ and for today’s English lesson, I would like you to do a little bit of research into the powerful weather system known to us as a tornado.

 

I have found this clip by the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0295zl2 which tells you how tornadoes are formed (I was surprised to hear that the UK has more tornadoes per square kilometre than any other country!) There are also many other clips you may like to investigate yourself too.

 

The aim for the week is that you develop your skills in writing creatively, focusing particularly on your use of imagery and language. Remember, when writing creatively, there are many things you need to consider such as your use of personification, similes, metaphors and expanded noun phrases, your use of rich vocabulary and your sentence structure.

 

Today’s title reads simply as ‘The Tornado’ and I would like you to imagine you are anxiously watching a tornado approach. Your writing should reflect the power, danger and ferocity of a tornado. I have included a small word bank below to get you started:

This week you are going to revise fractions and I have found some online teaching videos to help. There are 5 lessons in this unit and you will be working methodically through them – lesson 1 is today, lesson 2 tomorrow and so on. Unfortunately, it’s not me delivering this learning face to face, but I have already been through this with you before so you can use this to refresh your brain and hopefully feel good about how much you remember. If you find that you’ve forgotten some of the things covered, then this is a great opportunity to revise it. Take care to listen carefully and make sure you follow the teacher’s instructions. You’ll need a pencil and paper to record your jottings (and maybe some basic equipment) and then tomorrow, you should be able to check your answers at the beginning of the next lesson.

 

Because the lessons are fairly short (and I’m sure you’ll be wanting to push yourself) I would also like you to check out the Arithmetic paper saved below. This learning is good for your fluency and will ensure that your brain doesn’t get too rusty. You should be able to complete this paper in around 30 minutes. Have a go and see how you get on. Keep a track of your score to see if you can beat it with tomorrow’s paper (the answers are at the end of the paper so no cheating).
