As you know, our topic this week is ‘Extreme Earth’ and we are developing our ability to write descriptively. Building on yesterday’s work, I’d like you to look again at some video footage of tornadoes, but I’d like you to develop your perspective to one where you can recognise the devastation a tornado causes and yet still see the beauty and brilliance of its form. There are many storm-chasing videos on YouTube that you could take a look at, but I particularly liked the one linked below by Pecos Hank:
Watch the video and take some more time to find out about this powerful weather phenomena. When you have enough ammunition, write a short descriptive paragraph using a range of similes and metaphors, and be as descriptive as you can but I would like you to make comparisons between the beauty of the tornado and it’s obvious danger. To help you, here is what Hank said in one of his YouTube clips:
“Tornadoes manifest themselves in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are a wondrous bright white, others are dark, horrific monsters. Some twirl with the same mysteriousness as the ghost of a ballerina, whereas others are shape shifting, swirling cones like skinny writhing snakes… Most are harmless, grazing over rural farmland, whilst others are worst case scenarios.
You are to write no more than 100 words – make them brilliant!
You have a choice of two tasks in Geography today:
1) Create a factsheet about tornadoes. You should by now have learned a fair bit about this natural phenomena, however, I have added a weblink below which should give you lots more information. Have a look and see what else you can find out. Your fact sheet can be any size you like but it needs to be informative, eye-catching and have no less than 10 interesting facts. Have fun!
2) Make your own swirling vortex using plastic bottles, tape and water. Whilst tornadoes don’t actually involve water, this activity will help you see how tornadoes work (see pdf file below).

Hello marvellous people! Are you ready for your next thrilling fractions lesson from the National Centre of Excellence? I am hoping you coped well with yesterday’s lesson and have managed to gather some answers to the questions left at the end. Today you are going to take part in lesson 2 which is going to involve some practical work involving estimating, measuring and pouring - Just be careful not to make a mess and keep all liquids away from anything electrical.
The objective for this lesson is to further develop your understanding of equivalence and it should help to deepen your knowledge in a range of contexts. There is a task at the end which I’d love you to try – it’s a challenge but if you apply what you have learned you should be able to crack it. Enjoy your work and DON’T MAKE A MESS!
