Story Challenge!

Watch this funny animation Oktapodi again.

Story Ideas you have choose from:

  • Retell the narrative as it appears, using rich description and vivid imagery.
  • Write an alternative story, involving a different animal.
  • Write a story with a flashback, perhaps the octopus wakes up in the truck and a flash back takes place remembering the tank.

Remember you will need to think about:

  • Build tension, make it exciting - Show me, don't tell me!
  • Dialogue to move the story on – remember new speaker new line.
  • If you include dialogue, check your punctuation!

Today you are going to continue your story. Think about using:

  • Some interesting sentence openers and varying sentence structure.
  • A wide range of punctuation (, . : ; ! “ ?).
  • Ambitious vocabulary.
  • Expanded noun phrases to describe the setting and the characters.

Deep ocean ecosystem

Today’s lesson introduces you to an environment very different from your own — the deep ocean ecosystem of the Mariana Trench, in the Pacific Ocean. Discover more about this little known environment — the deepest part of the ocean — using a fun comic. What kinds of creatures live in the deepest part of the ocean? How was the Mariana Trench created? How have humans managed to explore this environment?

You will learn about the exploration of the Mariana Trench and what can be found there.

Activity:

Think about what living organisms need to survive? (i.e. energy, sunlight, food, etc.). How do they get these things? Think about whether these necessities are available in the deepest part of the ocean. Think about the ways that the creatures living in the Mariana Trench may have adapted to life 11km under the sea. After reading the comic, research to find out more about the sea creatures that have been discovered there, or in other deep ocean environments, and make a factfile sheets about them.
