Knowle Battery Fort and our School

The Fort, into which the original school was built in 1952, was known as Knowle Battery, which formed one of the protective strongholds which surrounded Plymouth.  The Forts were built just over one hundred years ago during the period that Palmerston was Prime Minister, as defensive positions against possible French attack, which he envisaged at the time.

This of course did not materialise and the forts - often referred to as 'Palmerston's follies' - fell into disuse later into the nineteenth century. Never the less but for Palmerstone and his fear of the French there would be no school at Knowle.

We are very proud of our School, situated as it is in one of the most delightful positions in Plymouth. It is a brand new building opened in September 2015 and has spacious 'Learning Streets', light and airy classrooms, a separate music studio and a fine hall. Our playing fields are immediately adjacent to the School and we are situated well away from the traffic - hazards of busy main roads.

We have four compact play spaces immediately adjacent to the school, which are used by Foundation, Years 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6.

'Stepping Stones' pre-school, havefull access to our school grounds since joining the school in May 2019. They were inspected in September 2015, as a stand alone Nursery, and were judged as 'Outstanding' by OfSTED.
