Sports Zone

Welcome to the KPS sports zone!

At Knowle, we provide children with a wide range of opportunities to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in PE to ensure they are well prepared for secondary school and beyond.

PE leads from the Learning Academies Trust came together to create an effective and robust long term plan for PE, following the National Curriculum,  from Foundation to Year 6. This ensures that the curriculum is progressive and children are able to build upon and consolidate previously learnt knowledge and skills.

Every child receives two hours of PE each week. On PE days, children come in to school wearing their PE kit which maximises the time where children can be active in lessons. From the Spring term, one lesson each week will be taught using our brand new scheme of work called 'Real PE' which comes highly recommended and is used by other schools in our academy trust. The focus will be on developing children's fundamental skills, personal skills and social skills and applying these to a range of activities. The other weekly lesson will focus on games, outdoor education, gym, dance, athletics and swimming. By having this approach from Foundation to Year six, children will receive a consistent and high quality diet of PE throughout their life at Knowle.

Sports coaches, clubs and specialist teachers also work with staff at Knowle. By providing regular CPD opportunities, we can ensure that teaching is of a high quality.

Children's achievements in school PE are celebrated by awarding a weekly KS1 and KS2 sports star of the week and children recieve dojo points in their PE lessons for excellent effort and participation.

All children have opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in PE throughout the school day, not just in lessons. Children can participate in the weekly 'personal best challenge' where the aim is to improve their score each day. Each week a new challenge is provided. Every class is also provided with the opportunity to sign up for at least one sports club per week. Some children are trained as sport leaders and they lead activities for their peers at break and lunch. If children do not want to do these activities, they have access to a wide range of equipment where they can set up their own games and activities. Each class also participates in 10 minutes of physical activity as part of their daily timetable.  We also sign up to various events throughout the year including city wide football events, cross country, hockey, boccia, tag rugby and athletics. At home, children also have access to 'Real PE at home' where they can do similar activities to those we do in PE lessons using their class log in information. PSSP virtual competitions are also promoted through Facebook and the website. Children can submit their scores and compete against other schools in the city.
