Year 5: Mercury

Welcome to Mercury Class!

Our classes are named after inspirational people. Our class is named after the one and only Freddie Mercury. He is known for his incredible set of vocals in the legendary band Queen. The children already know and will continue to learn more about Freddie Mercury across the year and why he is such an inspirational role model.

The class teacher this year is Miss Shaw and Miss Champion will be the teaching assistant this year.

Our topics this year are:

Autumn - The Victorians

Spring - Islamic Civilisation

Summer - Climate across the world

P.E. Days

Mr Rickard will teach the children P.E. on Wednesday and as usual the children will need to come to school in their P.E. kits. Please can they remember to have their hair tied up and remove any jewellery.

Homework

Weekly homework will include spellings to learn and a Times Tables Travels sheet, both sent home on a Friday. It would be great if children could practise their spellings and times tables travels at home throughout the week. If you can ask your children to spell words or recall tables – that would help!  Times Tables Travels tests are on a Thursday and Spelling test on a Friday. Children will also have a library book to read at home. Please could you encourage your children to read and listen to them read regularly, as well as completing their reading diary.

Reading

Children should bring in their reading records every day and are encouraged to read everynight at home. Please do encourage your child to read at home, it'll make a tremendous difference to their confidence and attainment in class!  The reading book you receive will be in line with your child's reading ability.  The children are assessed regularly and book levels are set accordingly.  Please try and complete their reading record by signing it to acknowledge they have read at home and we can check these in school and gets books quizzed and changed.

We appreciate your support and cooperation.

Class Novel

We are focussing on the book 'Journey to the River Sea'. This adventure novel is set in the wilderness of Brazil. It follows the journey of Maia, an orphan, whose distant cousins are discovered 4000 miles away. The tale is full of mysteries and wonder as you are transported through the Amazon rainforest.
